Chickie Update

Here is Georgie at 3 months old. She is quite a sweetie! She's very tame - with Jim and me only!



Here is Georgie's coop. A real Chickie Taj Mahal, built by Jim and his students from materials we provided - quite a learning experience for all! The left-hand side has a roost for sleeping at night. The right-hand side has private little nesting boxes for laying eggs.

Yes, we used to have TWO baby chicks, Fred and George. When they were small, they slept in a little cardboard coop in our shower. They followed us everywhere around the yard. They were both really cute. But Fred disappeared one afternoon. Boo hoo!

Pretty soon George (who turned out to be a female) befriended a batch of 5 orphan chicks, and then three more, and later three others. Hmmmm. I think she wants help with paying off her mortgage: We figure 333 eggs would repay us for the materials for her coop. About half of the orphans are hens. When these six little hens start laying about an egg per day per hen, we should have eggs-a-plenty and Georgie will be a debt-free chicken!

p.s. The grasslike plants in front of the chicken coop are sugar cane! They will grow to about 10 feet tall and will shade the coop and south side of the house.
