A great assignment fell right in my lap today: helping to reactivate the island craft center. A meeting here, a meeting there, and boom - the keys were in our hands and we were exploring the craft center building!
The building is marvelous. It has a big classroom, nice kitchen, rest rooms, and a storage room. And six sewing machines. Two are in great shape, two more may be repairable, and the other two are for display purposes only. The concept is this: Community members will come here to teach their craft specialties to other community members. The completed craft items will be sold in the island's souvenir shops, which will raise money for more craft projects. What a great way to affect many different aspects of island life - Preserving, sharing, and promoting local culture, tourism, education, and fun! One of the employees at the center works with beads and shells. Other community members are very supportive and have said they will teach what they know best: knitting and crochet, shell birds, and making jam. We have ideas for others, too. Some ladies are interested in learning how to sew.... in fact they were so insistent for such a long time that they rather forced me to pursue this whole craft idea. Who knew that my search for sewing macines, materials, and a place to teach would turn out this well!?
