We planned our monthly shopping trip to coincide with Thanksgiving. The U.S. Air Station invited all Volunteers for a wonderful Thanksgiving buffet... complete with lobster tail and a glass of wine. They made us feel very welcome and the food and companionship was marvelous. We felt as if Scotty had beamed us back to the U.S. for a couple of hours: air conditioning, hot water on tap, manicured landscaped grounds, tennis courts, and lots of white faces (we even detected a Texas accent!). WOW.
We ate until we couldn't hold any more.
Then we shopped 'til we dropped.
Many things that we deem "necessities" are not available on our island. So we just go hog wild when we go shopping on the main island: Tools for Jim's workshop projects, housewares (we bought a blanket... it's getting cool at night! Probably 72 degrees. Brrrr), garden supplies and tools, a few Christmas goodies, and some special groceries (like raspberry jam and ZipLoc bags). Also hair cuts and doctor appts. (Don't worry... just checkups).
Our fellow Volunteers who are posted on the main island were wonderfully helpful in giving us a place to stay and also finding and providing plants for our back yard & seeds for our garden. On our way home, we of course had to go through airport security. Our carry on bags consisted of live baby papaya trees and a spearmint plant. When the x-ray security guard peeked in to see what we had, she whispered "Lord 'a Mighty!" and provided extra TLC. Those security guards are used to seeing carry ons consisting of buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken, sheet cakes, and other treasures, but I guess not many people carry on trees. We've got news for 'em... next time we want to bring back a banana plant!
After all that madness, we were glad to get back to our quiet little island. The photo above shows Jim sorting and organizing his new tools... Doesn't it look like Christmas Morning???
Enough for this time...
